Teach Your Kids to Play Mary Had a Little Lamb on the Piano

There are many misconceptions about teaching kids how to play the piano. Some people believe that the only way children will learn is by taking lessons from a teacher. But did you know that you can teach your children to play the piano for free?

Mary Had A Little Lamb is a very popular song for beginner pianists. This article will teach you to play this recognizable tune and help your child find success at playing music!

How To Play Mary Had A Little Lamb

Playing the piano should be a fun experience for both you and your child. To teach your child how to play Mary Had A Little Lamb, start by teaching them how to play the notes on a keyboard.

The first step is to teach your child the white keys on the keyboard. From left to right, these keys are C, D, E, F, G, A and B. After making sure that they know how to find these keys on the keyboard, move on to the black keys (or sharps). These are found on either side of the white key lettering and have a sharp sign before their letter labeling. They are C#/Db, D#/Eb, F#/Gb, G#/Ab and A#/Bb.

Once they are able to find these sharps with ease and can identify them with their letters (or even their color), teach them how to play Mary Had A Little Lamb.

The First Verse of the Song

The first verse of the song is a repetition of four chords. The chords are G, A, D and E. For the music notation in the video, we will use letter names instead of numbers.

First, you need to know that there are two ways to play the notes on the piano: with one hand or with both hands. When you play with both hands, it’s called “chord playing.”

To learn how to play Mary Had A Little Lamb using chord playing, follow these steps:

-Start by placing your left hand on G and your right hand on A.

-Play these two chords over and over until they’re comfortable.

-Now put your left hand on D and place your right hand on E.

-Next, put your right hand back on G and your left hand back on A.

-Put your right hand on A and your left hand back on E after a few repetitions of putting it back and forth between those two chords.

The Second Verse of the Song

The second verse of the song is a little more challenging. So, start by playing the first four notes of the verse melody.

You’re going to want to add the thumb on the black key below middle C and then play an octave lower than before.

Now, you’re going to put your fingers in position for when we actually play the notes that sound in this verse. You’ll need your thumb on middle C and your fingers will be on E, G, A, and D.

Play these notes as you sing “Mary had a little lamb.”

The first time through singing it, you’ll have to do this quickly because there are only four notes. The second time through singing it, you’ll want to take a moment before each note so that your child can learn where they go without having to think about them too much. And then after just two times of singing it slowly with you accompanying them at the piano, they should be ready to try it on their own!
